Cabergoline is an oral tablet that is taken twice a week. Follow the instructions on your prescription label and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you don't understand.

Tell your prescriber about any other medications you are taking, including dietary supplements and herbal products. This may affect how well this medication works.

1. Weight Loss

High levels of prolactin cause a variety of symptoms in women. They include breast milk production in non-pregnant patients, nipple discharge, and changes to the menstrual cycle. Prolactin may also contribute to weight gain, fatigue, muscle aches, and cold sensitivity. In addition to other treatments, including surgery and medications such as bromocriptine (Parlodel or Cycloset), doctors can use cabergoline to control prolactin levels. This medication works differently than other common prolactinoma medications, and it may have milder side effects.

Cabergoline for Bodybuilding is taken as a pill with or without food two to three times a week. Your doctor will begin you on a low dose and increase it as needed, based on your symptoms. It can take up to 12 months to see full benefits.

Clinical studies have shown that cabergoline improves metabolic parameters in patients with prolactinoma. It enhances glucose homeostasis and reduces triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and fibrinogen levels compared with controls. It also lowers insulin resistance, hsCRP, and uric acid. These improvements appear to be related to baseline levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and a decrease in prolactin.

2. Energy

Cabergoline reduces your prolactin levels by inhibiting the secretion of this hormone from the pituitary gland. High prolactin can cause problems in women, such as abnormal menstrual cycles and breast milk production. It can also affect sex drive and the ability to get or keep an erection. In some cases, high prolactin levels are caused by a tumor in the pituitary gland, called a prolactinoma.

Fortunately, most patients experience few side effects with this drug. Some of the most common include dizziness, nausea, and spotting during treatment. If you experience any of these side effects, your doctor will help you manage them.

Long-term treatment with a low dose of cabergoline can restore regular menstrual cycles in women, as well as normalize sex drive. It can also help with erectile dysfunction in some men, especially when combined with tadalafil (Cialis). Studies have shown that an individualized high-dose treatment regimen allows many infertile women to achieve pregnancy, regardless of the size of their prolactinoma. Cabergoline can also improve sperm health and testosterone in males with high prolactin levels.

3. Low Blood Pressure

In addition to controlling prolactin levels, cabergoline has also been shown to help women with low blood pressure. This is because it has been proven to increase nitric oxide production in the body, which can lower blood pressure.

Several medications can interfere with the effectiveness of cabergoline by binding to its dopamine receptors and blocking its effects. These drugs include antipsychotics (e.g., haloperidol, chlorpromazine), dopamine agonists such as clonidine, and dopamine antagonists such as metoclopramide.

In one study, 85% of women with hyperprolactinemia who were taking 2-3 mg of cabergoline per week saw their PRL levels stabilize. The same study showed that all infertile women with a prolactinoma who were taking the medication regained ovulation within 3 months of treatment, and most saw their tumors shrink.

Patients should avoid taking cabergoline if they have a history of high blood pressure or severe liver, kidney, or heart disease. They should also not take it if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it may affect milk production or composition. Low blood pressure, which is often called orthostatic hypotension, can occur with this medication and should be monitored.

4. Heart Valve Issues

Although it is extremely rare, some patients on long-term cabergoline therapy may develop heart valve problems. This can be prevented by ensuring that your doctor listens to your heart and arranges an echocardiogram before starting treatment and regularly throughout your time on the medication.

In one study, higher doses of cabergoline were found to improve the metabolic abnormalities associated with high prolactin levels. This included improving body mass index (BMI), cholesterol levels, fasting insulin and hemoglobin A1c. This was found even when the level of prolactin had been normalized by the time the cabergoline therapy ended.

In another study, long-term cabergoline use was not found to be associated with an increased prevalence of tricuspid valvular disease when compared to cases treated with the antiparkinsonian drug bromocriptine. However, the study did find that cumulative cabergoline exposure was associated with a greater mitral valve tenting area/height, though not with significant valvular regurgitation, than controls matched for selected patient characteristics. This is consistent with the findings of other studies examining dopamine agonists and valvular disease.

5. Nausea

Cabergoline is a dopamine agonist that prevents the body from producing prolactin. By blocking the release of prolactin, the drug decreases the amount of milk produced by the breasts. It also causes a reduction in symptoms associated with hyperprolactinemia, including non-pregnancy-related breast milk production and nipple discharge. It also suppresses lactation in women who have already stopped breastfeeding and is sometimes used in combination with Cialis (tadalafil) to treat psychogenic erectile dysfunction.

In a study of 19 patients with prolactinoma, normalization of PRL by cabergoline caused a number of other metabolic abnormalities to resolve. These included changes to body composition, altered menstrual patterns and weight gain, decreased energy levels and fatigue and altered skin appearance.

Generally, cabergoline is well tolerated by most people at the lower doses used to treat prolactinomas. However, the medication has been associated with valvular heart disease in people taking larger doses for Parkinson's Disease, and therefore should be avoided by those with these medical conditions. It is also important to tell your doctor or pharmacist about any prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take while on treatment with this medication.
